Mt. Annapurna (8019 m.)

Annapurna one seen from Base Camp.photo by Jean The Netherland 2004Annapurna I (8091m) is the highest peak of the Annapurna massif in north-central Nepal. It is the tenth highest mountain in the world and was first climbed in 1950 by a French expedition, the summit being reached by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal on June 3rd. It was the first 8000m peak climbed. The ascent, via the north face, was immortalized in the Herzog's book Annapurna. It was another 20 years before it was climbed again. In 1970 the original route was repeated and Chris Bonington’s team climbed the south face, a landmark in the history of mountaineering.

Today it is arguably the most feared of the 8000m peaks as its easier north face is prone to avalanches. The name Annapurna translates as ‘Goddess of the Harvests’ or ‘the Provider’.

Other major peaks on the Annapurna range are Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7555m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Gangapurna (7455m) and Annapurna South (7219m).
