  Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586 m.)

Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586 m.) Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, is located in eastern Nepal. The mountain has five separate peaks, the name meaning ‘the Five Treasures of the Snow’ in the local dialect. Climbing attempts on the mountain began in 1930, a European expedition consisting of German, Austrian, Swiss and British mountaineers making an attempt from the Indian (Sikkim) side. Then in June 1955 a British expedition under Charles Evans put four men on the top, though they did not actually stand right at the summit as local people asked them not to as it was believed a god lived there. The book on the expedition was called The Untrodden Peak.

Later the Japanese climbed Yalung Kang, the second highest of the five summits. All the other peaks have also now been climbed and the main summit has been reached many times.
